FREQUENTLY ASKED

QUESTIONS

Which professional hair extension application method is best for me?

It depends on your own hair and what you want to achieve. To find out which application is best suited for you and your hair, we recommend booking a consultation before getting hair extensions fitted.

How long should my extensions last?

Depending on the type of hair, will depend on how long your hair extensions will last. The correct aftercare and regular maintenance (if you have professional extensions fitted) will increase the life span of your hair extensions. With good aftercare the hair can last up to one year.

Can I heat my hair extensions?

Yes, Beauty Works Human Hair can be heated and styled, however this can reduce the lifespan of the hair extensions. Beauty Works recommend using heat no higher than 180 degrees.
Please note: Styling and Heating all of Beauty Works products can damage the condition of the hair and reduces its life-span.

What lengths of hair extensions do you offer?

Beauty Works hair extensions include a wide selection of lengths including 14” up to 24”. However all lengths are not applicable to every product.

What length extensions do you recommend?

We recommend no longer than 6" past your natural hair length to result in natural looking hair extensions.

Will hair extensions damage my hair?

To make sure your natural hair and your extensions maintain their qualities it is important to add both nutrition and moisture. Because hair extensions do not have their own follicles and always lie slightly away from the scalp, they do not share the same natural oils as your natural hair. This makes them even more dependent on added moisture and oils to keep from getting dry and coarse. A dry climate also makes the hair drier, especially during the winter months. The two most important products for giving your natural hair and your extensions the care and moisture they need are shampoo and conditioner. Shampoo gives your hair both nutrition and moisture while conditioner seals the hair strand. Using a hair mask 1-2 times a week is also a great way to give your hair that extra moisture boost. The hair mask, however, does not replace the effect of your conditioner, so always finish with conditioner. There are many different options available on the market for hair care products. For those with hair extensions, we recommend Beauty Works own hair care series. It's formulated for use with hair extensions, while maintaining the beauty of your natural hair.

How long will my hair extensions last?

The durability of your hair extensions will depend on the hair quality you choose. How long your hair extensions last will also depend on the type of attachment and method you use. Permanent extensions can last up to three months before needing maintenance, and semi-permanent between 6 and 8 weeks. The hair can last up to a year if maintained correctly. Your extensions and their attachment will last longer if you give a little TLC. Following the care instructions for your product is a good idea. When you go to bed, we recommend braiding your hair to make sure it stays tangle-free. You should also do this when you exercise and when you think your hair may be affected by the weather. We also recommend that you check your permanent extensions within 5-7 weeks of putting them in. By doing this you can avoid the risk of too much outgrowth, which can cause the extension to damage your hair. Detangling your hair with recommended brushes (we recommend the Tangle Tamer Ultra) on a regular basis also reduces the risk of knots in your hair and attachments. The soft bristles of our recommended brushes are gentle and nourishing on your hair and extensions. Chlorine and salt water will always damage your hair, so we recommend to braid your hair or put it up in a high bun to avoid contact with the water.

How should I wash my hair extensions?

Whether you have hair extensions or not, there are some things that you should avoid exposing your hair to. It’s a good idea to comb through your hair before you shower. Also be sure to use recommended brushes (Tangle Tamer Ultra). Never brush damp or wet hair. Wet hairs are much weaker than dry ones, and brushing wet hair increases the risk of hair fallout. When shampooing your hair, you can massage the shampoo and cleanse the roots, then let it flow through the tips when rinsing. This will help you avoid unnecessary wear on your ends while still ensuring clean, fresh hair. Just as with your natural hair, you should also avoid using conditioner near your scalp. This weighs your hair down and closes off the pores on the scalp, which can cause hair loss, fungus formation and an oily scalp. This is also not advised when you have hair extensions in, as it may cause your extensions to become slippery, which makes the attachments slide off the hair. Instead, apply conditioner on your ends and rinse; no rubbing is necessary to make sure it is working. Then apply heat protection and let your hair air-dry (Do not sleep with wet hair extensions) or use a hair dryer on a low heat setting. Avoid rubbing your hair, and instead squeeze out the water with a towel. Rubbing your hair wears on the outer layers, which can result in dull hair. When the hair is completely dry, comb, brush and style to get your desired look and results.

Will hair extensions damage my hair?

No! If your extensions are of a high standard, have been fitted correctly and you have followed the simple ‘Do’s & Dont's’ of hair extensions, then your own hair should in fact become better in its condition and grow! But if you do not look after your hair, damage may occur.

Is it safe to remove and reapply extensions in the same day?

Yes, it is fine to have them removed and replaced in the same day, unless you have experienced any problems with your previous set. We will discuss this with you during your consultation.

Can I wear my hair up?

Yes! Although some methods are more discreet than others depending on the thickness of your own hair.

Is it normal to lose extensions?

Yes! Very normal! We all shed between 150- 300 natural hairs a day through general wear and tear and some bonds will naturally come away during this process.

What method is best for me?

We offer three types of extensions, nano’s, micro’s and sewn in weaves. The best method for you will be determined during a complimentary consultation before your appointment.

How far in advance do I need to book my appointment?

Evenings and weekends are our most popular times. We do recommend booking 6-8 weeks in advance for colour services, sometimes longer during busy periods. Pre booking your next appointment when leaving the salon is also recommended.

Do I need a skin test?

Yes. A skin test is mandatory if you are having any colour service with us for the first time.

What is short notice for a cancellation?

We politely ask for at least 48 hours notice if cancelling an appointment. This allows us time to allocate this slot to another client.

Do I need a consultation before a colour service?

We offer a complimentary 15 minute consultation which gives you and your stylist a chance to decide on a style which suits you. It allows our stylists to find out more about you and your hair and also enables you to ask any questions you may have.

What happens if I am late for my appointment?

We ask that you arrive promptly for your appointment. If you’re late we will do our best to carry out your service but may need to shorten the appointment so as not to affect other clients for the rest of the day.

Do I need to pay a deposit?

All new clients are required to pay a small deposit to secure their appointment. You can pay your colour and extension appointment deposits here.

Do I need to buy aftercare products?

After you’ve invested all that time and money in your hair at the salon, why not continue this at home? During your appointment your stylist will be able to advise you of all the correct aftercare products you need to use to keep your hair looking great in between appointments.

Can I bring my child with me when having my hair coloured?

We welcome children into the salon, but understand that their attention span is only so long. We also want you and others to enjoy your experience with us, so if possible we would ask that your child is accompanied by another adult.
